after many requests, I have decided to start a new map thread to showcase my LOST island work without all the clutter.

THE BIG PICTURE MAP
I have placed some of the known locations on this map,
& I will continue to update this one periodically as I work on it.
UPDATED WITH THE NEW BDM

according to this overlay, my othersville placement was pretty good !

& the HYDRA was dead right
as it has been for years.

THE MAPS and my beginnings with them


we first saw the maps in SOLITARY, inside Danielles shelter where she held Sayid.



I knew the map needed to be flopped due to the writing on the map and the shape of the mountain shown



this gave me the basic shape of the island in 2d.
next I imported it in a 3d program capable of adding height.



this was my first 3d island posted as an overhead image, rendered in bryce.


then rendered from a perspective view, altering textures in bryce, this is where the fun began.




My first map thread was an attempt to use this new map as a reference to where the losties may have crashed.
okay guys, theorize, where's camp ?

after much speculation and debate between a few of us original lost map makers
we ended up with camp on the southwest coast




this is my quick modelling of the camp on the island.

THE SIDE VIEW PROBLEM

I discovered a slight problem soon after trying to merge the maps into a ficticious yet logical island.
The side view map did not fit with the overhead map from earlier.
it shows a big mountain, blocking everything behind it

















the entire island is hidden behind le crater according to the sideview....

this was my take on how the map should have looked

I edited the ABC map to better illustrate the problem

very roughly, the map should have looked like this..
if this big mountain is le crater...

the areas I drew are the two very distintive mountain ranges... le plateaus
& the triangle island should also be further east..

THE MISSING ISLETS
this thread dates back to 2005, I had a theory the others would be located on a separate small island.

we have all seen the main map in season one.. episode title : SOLITARY
(notice, no islets (small islands) south of the island, by the crater)


this is from when Sayid is going to steal them.. same ep.

then we saw more map in another episode..
Sayid had noticed when he overlapped the 3 maps, they fit together, kinda showing the location of something..

episode title : SPECIAL..
exactly 9.47 minutes in, Sayid overlaps the maps.

then season three... we see this shot

LOCATION OF OTHERSVILLE

this is my guess on where the othersville should be

most of us map makers have the LOSTIES camp in the lower south/western corner of the island by the crater.

I dont think the others are in a crater, nor are they near it.
they seem to be behind the end of a chain of mountains..



so I dont think that tiny little lonely hill on the right is part of a crater.
its just a lone formation along the edge of the island.

the left hill is one of the fishbone looking hills that desends from the plateau of the mountain range..
which ends near the centre of the screen, pointing out the the bay on the other side,
right beside the pennisula I now assume the tail crashed near.

FROM SEASON THREE EPISODE 1..
the others watch as 815 breaks up in the air.
backs facing northeastish...


as the plane goes from right to left.. (northeast to southwestern)



southwesternish more.. the tail falls and ends up crashing on the northern penninsula.


now they are looking southwesternish to where the fuselage landed
(this image seems to be more southish btw, we are looking more direct at the mountain range)



still looking south westernish (but the camera begins to pan to face southwesternish)



and south westernish still (as the camera backs up to the north eastern edge)

the red dots are where the plane pieces fell, the green is where the fuselage should have fallen, but its pretty close imo.
we cant expect perfection.

MORE ON THE LOCATION OF OTHERSVILLE.

I had also used the shot itself to find the location to the best of my ability.

this is me importing the image into Zbrush2, in order to line up my 3d map with the capture.











now zooming out to show where it makes the most sense placed..






= othersville is on the NORTHEAST section of the island.

THE LAYOUT OF OTHERSVILLE


Television had attempted to do the layout of othersville..

so I did it in 3d, I had wanted to do it earlier, but TV really inspired me.











(the camera is facing south west'ish)


If I am right with this, there are 23 houses in othersville !

325 FOUND ON THE MAPS

it may not mean anything, but I also found 325 on the maps.
(ben told Michael to take a heading of 325 to find rescue)

HOW MUCH THE LOST ISLAND RESEMBLES OAHU (where they film)

ETA, you'd figure they would make use of the similar background scenes..
ie landmasses, crater edges...

ONE SOLUTION TO THE SIDE VIEW HILL PROBLEM
(done long before season three even began)


MOVE THE CRATER..changing the map, but the map maker could not have been perfect.





to get even close to the side view map, I had to cheat the size of le crater..











It looks like this map shows only one mountain mass,
so they have to be wrong about it
it should look like the above shot from this angle,
but the two plateaus are missing



from SEASON THREE...


ETA. now thats interactive television !

FARCRY

I imported the map into the farcry engine and can now venture around the island, on foot, in a boat, jeep, or paraglider.

here are some of my farcry level images..
(the engine does all the graphics work, all I do is edit it a little)

a 1024 pixel sized map is too small for a lost island.
(I need more ram to make this work in scale)

but the trees and all look pretty cool.
I havent gone into all that much detail based on it being the wrong size.

this one is looking from the islet westernly toward the centre of the island, "le crater" is on the left.

in the show the crater is a lot more central, but there is a problem using the side map with the top view.
as most should know by now. (if they follow this thread)

here it is from the east side, you are now looking head on toward the landmass on the right in the image above.
this area is the dark territory, I even put a radio tower on the mountain.

remember, the island is too small to use. this is just a little preview for now
the land needs to be twice as big.

now over the valley, toward the river path between the northwestern mountain range, out to danielles premiere camp.
(IF she drew "premiere camp" on the map)

now facing where we just came from. we are now on the west side looking east toward the islands northern end.
the pala ferry may be here, as well as the fake camp.
and four toes, and the hole in the rock. all should be down by the beach I made.
but like I said, its too small to be our island.

now we are panning down the west coast to the south western beach camp and crater area..

now we are on the top of the crater, looking down at the first camp, where the fuselage fell.

and now, we are looking from the crater toward the centre of the island, between le plateaus.

here I am standing on the hydra islet (according to my placement of it anyway)
that is the alex islet on the right by the islands edge (the island is MUCH larger, but gets clipped by fog)




then here I am standing on the alex islet, looking back at the hydra..
the scale just seems better.




UPDATE.

I have tried to get a better look to the some of the main mountains in my Farcry level..
I am aiming for the jurassic park/ kualo valley backdrop. forget the textures so far..






Update.. I will remove some of these as detail improves..






& this is the beginning of my island field.. just getting an idea of how things will look for now.




here is my temporary othersville, I need to create the houses and import them into the engine.. lots of work.
