It's an idea I had almost immediately after watching the Season 3 finale, and since I haven't seen it brought up here before I just had to register to hear someone elses opinion on it...

The main reason I assume this is because it could explain why Libby was there at the end - being another figment of Hurleys imagination. Of course, the way the camera was panned and all, might not support this, but still. Because of her death (and the fact that we probably won't ever get to see Flashbacks from her) and because of the fact that I highly doubt that this appearance will be explained in a Hurley FB I really think that this theory is a very distinct possibility.

So far, this is the only episode of the entire show which ends with a flashback scene, although Through the Looking Glass similarly ended with a flash-forward scene. (From Lostpedia)

Although I do not agree with this specific theory, Libby being alive would not be too much of a stretch. That is if you subscribe to the theory that Christian is alive in the future. However, the hospital had too much to do with Hurley being on the island to begin with (numbers etc..) This would have to be a backstory.

Oooooo... I get to spout off my Libby theory.

Widemore wanted Dez to be well and truly away from his daughter. What better place than Craphole island? So, finding out Dez is interested in the race he arranges for his flunky Libby to provide him with a boat, with navigation gear that has been fiddled with, and Dez ends up lost at sea.

At a later point Libby ends up in the institute where Widemore has her observing, not Hurley, but Crazy Lenny, the only known person who has heard radio transmission from the island.

Later Hurley wins the lottery with the numbers and, remembering he was in the institute and pals with Lenny she follows him to see if he discovers anything. She's on the plane because she is tailing Hurley.

I see what you're getting at but I also believe the flash forward from the season 3 finale is the first of it's kind. I would point to the fact that the writers saw fit to include a big hint (the Hoffs/Drawlar anagram) as if to signal a major new addition or change of perspective.

Although if there was a similar clue in the Dave scenes then you really would have something

Hmm, I just skipped through the episode and rewatched the scene with Leonard, Dave and Hurley where Leonard keeps repeating the numbers, Dave mocks him and Hurley replys "They're just numbers, Dude."

A quite mild reaction, considering the way he usually reacts to them on-island. Of course, after Tricia Tanka is Dead, doesn't Hurley believe that he isn't cursed anymore? It probably still isn't enough to justify it, but if this really is a flashforward and Hurley is anywhere near to Jack in terms of being screwed up, then I guess we could explain a lot of the stuff he sees/does/says in the hospital here.

I don't know, it probably really is just a stupid theory, but I've seen much more crazy stuff on here and the whole off-island-scene being the last scene of the episode is just too big of a coincidence for me on a show like LOST. Maybe in the future if we'll see more flashforwards and they'll also end off-island, this will strengthen my theory.

I guess I can call off this theory, unless flashforward episodes will really prove to always end off-island, but I'm glad to at least have it out of my mind now.

I wonder if they will do a episode about Hurley being upset about everything etc. and he ends up seeing Libby... That's one way to bring her back.

He reacted midly to the numbers because he didn't associate them with his bad luck/curse yet.
