ALT Timeline?
What if the ALT timeline, or sideways flashes, is not a the ALT timeline. What if that is the real timeline, the real lives that these characters are experiencing. That is the "real world" so to speak.
The Island timeline is the ALT timeline. That is why Jacob and Flock/MiB are so careless/reckless with the lives of the people on the island. They have no concern of who lives or who dies becasue it doesn't really matter. These people are living their real lives elsewhere. They don't really die on the island.
I was just thinking this during last nights episode and thought I would throw it out there.

The Donnie Darko scenario - where the island is a tangent universe created due to an artifact falling through from the real world. It is the job of the chosen one (candidate?) to make sure that the artifact goes back into the real world otherwise the universes will collapse and the world will end.
Check out the synopsis of Donnie Darko, and you will find a whole host of similarities to Lost.

I'll have to check out Donnie Darko. I don't know anything about it, is it a comic book, movie, tv show?

It's a movie. Highly recommended. Even if you don't like Jake Gyllenhaal.

Re: ALT Timeline?
The ATL seems to serve no purpose other than to give our characters "closure," or, to give us closure with our characters.
I don't know if I'd call it the "real" timeline, but I think it might be the "final" one.

Re: ALT Timeline?
Something occurred to me recently in terms of the alt-universe:
We've seen team-Jacob members have redeeming moments in which they make fundamental changes in their neurotic patterns: Jack connects with his son rather than trying to control/save the situation or spinning out of control; Ben saves Alex and resists assuming a corrupting power; Hurley is not obsessed with his luck; Dogen with his son.
We've also seen what currently seems to be team-MiB stuck in their usual patterns with no redemption: Sayid is still stuck killing off adversaries because of his past; Kate is still running; Jin is separated from Sun and still doing his father-in-law's dirty work.
Is this a pattern worth exploring?

Re: ALT Timeline?
a problem with this theory is what about all the flashbacks we saw the first 3 seasons? if the ATL timeline is real, then were all those flashbacks fake? if so, then that would be kind of douche of TPTB...
