The alternate time-line is obviously VERY important with regards to the end of the series, simply due to the time dedicated to it.

In each case it seems clear that the Losties lives are working out much better in that time-line.

And so the question is whether or not that time-line is there to provide a happy ending for the characters. That way any deaths in the island time-line are balanced by happy lives in the ALT time-line.

Sort of like Pulp Fiction? People are already dead, but here's a happy ending for you? Nah, it can't be that, since things are different. So, it's just pretend? A dream? How would that work?

Well I'm thinking that those on the island may die or sacrifice themselves knowing they created the alternate time-line. I'm not exactly sure how it would work, but TPTB sure seem to be working hard to show how much better it is in alternate land.

I'm not too sure there will be a happy ending. There is this creepyness to the ALT time line that makes me think that the ALT is the worse case scenario, perhaps. I'm not ready to commit to the ALT ending well.

I'm not willing to commit to it ending well, but I do think it's showing what they might have asked for, as a boon or a price, on the island.

I think it will be a bittersweet ending in any case.

If Jacob wins, Jack and Sawyer will turn into Jack and MIB continuing their shenanigans. Rose and Bernard, in turn die in a cave like Adam and Eve. The rest of the survivors either are prisoners or the latest replacements of the dharma initiative.

If MIB wins, the island sinks. Most if not everyone dies in the process including Rose and Bernard and Vincent. Maybe a few damaged souls escape the island and return to life as we know it. No more need for protecting the island, no more shenanigans.

I don't think that all the lives are working out better:
Jin is still doing his father-in-law's dirty work and getting beat up for it.
Sayid is still stuck as the homicidal avenger.
Kate is still a fugitive on the run.
Charlie's still a hopeless junkie.

In the case of Charlie. At least he's still alive.
Kate's free for the moment.
Sayid might get Nadia.
Jin's the only one who life seems better on the island.
