How is it possible that Miles would display such apathy?
Please help me out here.
I was under the impression that Kate's primary reason for returning to the island was to find (and bring back) Claire.
Why then (in Sundown) did we witness this exchange?
[Kate approaches Miles]
MILES: Wow.
KATE: It's good to see you too Miles.
MILES: Sawyer sent you packing huh? I thought about going after him too. But, um, I knew he'd just end up berating me until I turned around and came back. That pretty much what happened?
KATE: Pretty much.
MILES: Well, welcome back to the circus.
KATE: What's going on in here?
MILES: Well, let's see, oh - that Australian chick's back.
KATE: Wait, what?
MILES: You know the- the blonde? One that had the baby?
KATE: Claire?
MILES: Right. Claire. She just strolled in here a couple hours ago, acting all weird. Still hot though.
KATE: Miles, where is she? [Miles shakes his head] - Where is she!?
I mean......., obviously Kate had explained her reason for returning. She would of course have grilled Sawyer, Jin, Miles & Daniel as to Claire's whereabouts immediately upon her arrival wouldn't she?
Wouldn't Miles' first line be more like:
Wow! Thank goodness you're back! Amazing news Kate! Claire (the Aussie chick that you gave up your life to find) just walked through the front gate!
But no. We get an apathetic Miles who mentions it in passing - attaching little or no significance to it.
Are we to surmise that Kate had never even mentioned her quest to her compatriots?
Am I missing something?

Yeah, that felt off key to me too. Expecially as Miles was one of the last people to see her.

I don't think she mentioned her quest. We cut away when Jack asked her why she came back, as part of the big mystery. And one casual "do you know about Claire?" (which may even have been on screen) would establish they didn't--par for lostie course.

Yes, I agree that it's par for the course but it irritates me that the writers wouldn't imagine that someone in Kate's position would employ her trusted friends (7 sets of eyes) to assist in searching for Claire.
Oh, for the good old days!....................... Remember seasons ago when we were discussing how the Losties' apparent "disconnect" & lack of sharing (info) may have been associated with the "Island sickness"?
Sadly now it just seems to point to sloppy writing and poor continuity.
As an episode, I thought Sundown was terrific (as are most episodes) but the story threads need to be consistent from ep to ep.

While Kate was off island wrestling with the decision, Miles was in the 70's listening to Geronimo Jackson and smoking banana leaf.

Yeah that, and quite honestly I don't think Miles gives a s about our gallant band or any of their lives. He is looking out for Miles and nobody else - I love the guy (but not in that way)

I think she only told Claire's mother and then possibly Jack under duress. She didn't want him to even dare mention Aaron's name.

Kate and Miles barely have ever talked together anyways and if she was barely willing to tell Jack why she came back, why would you think she had told Miles?

Jacob showed up in Burn Notice (1.02, as a conman) and I was sadly thinking what short work the Team of Michael, Fi, Sam, and even Madeline would have made of figuring out and escaping from the island.

Fair point. Did he levitate those diamonds out of the ground? We didn't see him digging, and the diamonds would actually be really hard to pick out, mixed in with the sand.
I think the better question is why Jack--who was close to Aaron, who knows Kate's quest, who knows Claire is his sister and Aaron his nephew--is so apathetic about it. Not even asking Dogon for details of what "the sickness" meant relative to Claire? Which he could have passed on when they conveniently tripped over each other after leaving the temple.
