Xbox 360 To Support USB Storage In System Update
First, let's start off with current the Xbox 360 supports USB storage for non-system components. The Xbox 360 currently allows you to use USB-based storage media for pictures, video, and music.
Coming sometime in the near future the Xbox 360 will support USB storage for items like profiles, avatar items, game add-ons, and likely even media.
The good on this is, now you can use just about any USB thumb drive for saving your profile. The bad on this is, the USB storage device must be at least 1GB in size, it'll only support partitions up to 16GB, and you must partition and format the USB storage device so that it will work with the Xbox 360.

Re: Xbox 360 To Support USB Storage In System Update
So if I download a movie or something on my computer, can I play it on my 360 via a flash drive?

You can already do that, however USB drives by default are limited to 4GB partitions because they're formatted with FAT 32. From my understanding, the Xbox 360 will currently only recognize FAT 32.
I haven't been able to get streaming to work with my Xbox 360 and Vista, for whatever reason, it's slow.
Anyway so my brother wanted to watch a movie, we used a 4GB USB thumb drive to put the movie on, then stick it in the Xbox 360's USB slot. In this case, the USB thumb drive only shows up in the My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos panes as a location to read from.
You can also use an external HDD for the same.
What you'll be able to do, once this update happens is take a 4GB USB thumb drive, stick it in your Xbox 360, go into the Memory properties on the System Configuration pane, and use the USB thumb drive to store stuff on it.
Be aware, once you do that, it's not readable by a PC without some specific software.

Shouldn't streaming from a PC to the 360 be a simple, simple process? Hell, it is from my Mac to the 360.

Yeah. It was pretty simple for me too. You can't play anything other than wmv files from a flash drive. You can stream any kind of video file from your computer.

Something is slowing my network down. I actually copy from Windows Vista to Windows XP using LIVE Sync then stream from Windows XP.
I tried copying a file from Vista to XP and it told me it would take 4600 days.
I think it's actually the LIVE Sync software that's doing it, but I haven't tried it without it.

Re: Xbox 360 To Support USB Storage In System Update
Just an update on this.
I haven't read where this was officially said but apparently there is a limit of 2 USB devices of up to 16GB per console. Hopefully that's per gamertag and not console because I would think that's rather restrictive for off-loading content.
I'm not sure why there would be a restriction though, so hopefully when this officially is announced and rolled out everything will be clearer.

Re: Xbox 360 To Support USB Storage In System Update
Just to update you on this. On April 6th Microsoft will be releasing an update.
Officially, you can have 2, 1GB to 16GB USB devices connected at once, for a total of 32GB of storage connected at once. It doesn't appear that there's a limit to the number of USB devices in total that you configure, just connected at one time.
External USB HDDs can be used, but you'll want to partition them in 16GB partitions.
Also, Microsoft will be partnering with SanDisk to release licensed storage.
