Re: The Leftovers

I had no idea getting a building out of foreclosure was called getting it redeemed (or however it's said).

I forgive the clichť now.

With The Leftovers, I'm not convinced that the writer has any answer to the mystery in mind. There may truly be no answer, the Departure may simply be the plot device used by the writer to create the world he wants to tell his story in. If that's all it is, then I find that lazy and uninteresting.

I know you love a mystery, Sarge. Come play.
If a mystery has no answer, then it's not really a mystery. There's no point in looking for clues, if the answer does not exist.

Re: The Leftovers

Jesus H Christ! You guys have been busy. I'll be back to read the new posts.

Just stopped by to leave this for Vonne. I thought she'd enjoy it.

"Two Boats and a Helicopter"
This is the story of a man who lived by a river.

One day it started to rain very hard, and the river began to flood. A boat came by to offer him a way off his flooded porch. "Don't worry about me," said the man as he sent the boat away. "God will save me."

Soon the man's first floor was covered in water and a second boat rode by: "Get in," the passengers called, "we can help you." Again came the stubborn man's refrain: "Don't worry — God will save me."

In a few short hours, the man's entire house was under water, save the chimney on which he, praying, perched. A helicopter appeared overhead and tossed down a rope, but, as with the two boats: "God will save me" and all that.

As his last chance of survival flew from sight, and the water swallowed his chimney stoop, the man of faith, accusingly, cried out to God, "I had faith in you! Why haven't you come through yet?" The skies opened up, and God called down, "What more do you want me to do? I sent you two boats and a helicopter!"

Re: The Leftovers

I posted that joke (in short form) upthread, Hodge

Still trying to figure out how it relates to the episode. Who is the drowning man (Matt)? Who is "god" (actual god, the departed, the GR)? What represent the boats and helicopters?

And Neill, stop trying to make sgt post here. Please.

If the purpose of the show is to develop how our answers to a mystery can be a function of the will of competing individuals and groups seeking to impose their construct of reality on others, then I can't think of anyone better.

There is a suggestion of rational communication with unseen informants: only voices...

Oh-- if Cop's Dad is really talking to the missing people, surely it can't be JUST him, has this happened to a lot of people? They've "gone crazy" because of what happened...
Yeah, when he said, "They're sending you or sent you someone to help.", it really touched a nerve in Chief-Jr. I remember the look on his face, and his reply, "uh, what did you say?"

I would think there would be several townspeople who suffered some type of mental breakdown over the departure. I'm curious, how many of Chief-Sr.'s mental hospital neighbors are there for the same reason?

Chief-Sr. asked about his grandson, and Chief-Jr. said he was attending college in Arizona. Yeah right! The only college classes he's attending are Asian studies.

Is the three years from revelation or something, or is that made up for this show? I don't know my rapture lore quite well enough...
I agree whatever he's seen through visions or dreams, wasn't the FBI raid on the ranch. Although, he's told was Christine, the Asian girl, is important, he hasn't told us why.

AFAIK, there's no significance to three years after the "Rapture". I'm really not sure anything happens after the event in the Bible.

Yeah, I watched that scene again and he was definitely holding his lips against his. And, I totally agree NeillT, it had nothing to do with sex or romance. I also remember Wayne telling Tom, "he wouldn't let me do that before." Now, I'm really curious what he was doing?

I wonder if you enter and you're already a smoker, you have to quit until you're initiated.
I wonder if you're a non-smoker are you required to start?

In actuality, I think Matt is the man drowning. And, if we wanted to, we can say God implanted the thought in that painting which drove him to find the money, take it to the casino, and win enough to get his church off the auction block.

These two posts have inspired a question I'd like to propose to the people in the thread.

Question: Rev. Jamison's faith has brought him thru his wife's accident. It's kept him in the pulpit every Sunday preaching the gospels, even to a small congregations. When he laid in that cot, and asked God, "help me", I'm sure in his mind, the revelation and the wherewithal, to get enough money to save his church, came from God.

As Mxc90 rightfully points out, he was headed to the bank to redeem the most important thing to him when, being a good-Summerton, put him in a coma and in the hospital.

Now he's lost his church, has he also lost his faith?

I didn't think so. "The grace period is over." That's one of the things I keep thinking about.

Surely. It's a sacrament to them, "we don't smoke because we enjoy it."

But was it really God? See below...

I think that was the entire idea. And I think part of it was bringing him so close to "redemption"-- he had the money, after all he had to go through to get it-- only to snatch it away at the last second. It hurts more that way.

Could the whole thing be completely orchestrated? Down to the rock thrown at him?
That would imply foreknowledge, but I don't think we can escape that at this point, what with the red-red-red.
SOMEONE (God, Satan, the Departed, something inside Matt's brain)* put this in motion in one way or another. Put the pigeons on the table. Put the pigeons on the stoplight and made it blink. Rigged the roulette OR knew what it would do. I'd argue that SOMEONE also buried that 20G and told Matt about it only in the space of "split-scene" that we did not see. There is definitely a force going on here that has supernatural power (this could not be all coincidental).

Do the GR have a link to this SOMEONE and are cooperating under those instructions? Instructions to begin stalking him, to be at a certain corner at a certain time (when a rock would be thrown), to buy the church?

His coma-sequence started with the GR lady at the door of the church, and ended with Laurie (not bc of who she was, I think, but because of who she is-- a member of the GR).

***Not trying to ruffle any religious feathers but obv in this show we can't avoid references to God, etc-- so when I post of it, I'm not trying to say anything about the actual world, just about the fictional world of the show, no one take offense please.
