Re: Outlander (on STARZ)

I watched, but kind of with one eye. Still, it moved right along, gave enough information about the story to let the viewers that didn't read progress with the characters, and seemed to be over in about twenty minutes. But I am easy, so take that with a grain of salt.

Re: Outlander (on STARZ)

I liked it a LOT. The hubby and I both did. It's well-written and well-acted. The scenery is BEAUTIFUL (on location in Scotland). Obviously, high production values are involved. I can't think of anything I didn't like, and a lot I liked very much. Some people have said they thought the first half of the premiere was slow, but I thought it was intentional so as to show the contrast between her life in the 1940s and her life in the 1740s, and it worked for me. Besides, all of that was just background info that we needed. One thing I like a lot is that Claire is from the 1940s. That's an interesting twist, and allows us to avoid a lot of cliched time travel dialogue (like about computers or cell phones, or even TVs). I also like that she is just innately tough and sassy without having to have some feminist "edge" about her. She doesn't NEED it. (Don't get me wrong--I'm definitely not dissing feminism, but the best kind is when it just IS and doesn't have to be in-your-face to prove a point.) She's a modern woman, but 1940s-style, which also means she grew up learning how to deal with overbearing guys, and she does a damn good job of it--again, no cliched dialogue. Overall, the hubby and I both thought it was excellent.

Re: Outlander (on STARZ)

As I feared it is definitely geared toward the female viewer. Nothing wrong with that, just not my cup of tea. But I'll give it a few episodes.

Re: Outlander (on STARZ)

I'm female, I really liked the first three books, and yet, I couldn't finish the first episode...

AZ, does this mean you didn't like the first episode?

I'm going to try and watch it this week.

Re: Outlander (on STARZ)

I had major issues with the first episode, Hodge.

For those who have read the books...
Spoiler: and to keep it from those who haven't...
the time between the first page and Claire's jump through time doesn't take that long. In trying to establish the Claire in the 1940s to viewers unfamiliar with the books by expanding the pre-jump period, coupled with the voice over that explains things that should have been shown by the script, or perhaps revealed in dialogue, I was well bored before thirty minutes had passed.
I believe that people who haven't read the books will enjoy it, if the director and writers stay even half way close to the stories in the novels, but I'm definitely not the audience for this show.

Re: Outlander (on STARZ)

It's often difficult, I think, when something on film is based on a book that you've read, to relate to the film version. It's not what you see in your head. I've had that problem before. I haven't read these books, though, so I guess that's a good thing insofar as the show goes because I liked it.

ETA: I have to comment on the music, too. If you like Bear McCreary (BSG, The Walking Dead, Da Vinci's Demons, etc.), this is Bear in top form. The score is fantastic, and added another layer to my enjoyment of the premiere episode.

Re: Outlander (on STARZ)

So, I'm wondering if anyone has continued watching this?

I started watching Ep01 over the weekend, but got interrupted. It looked interesting, although I was waiting forever for her to be whisked away. I'll get back to it this week.
