Re: Feud:Bette and Joan - FX Sunday

I am looking forward to this show. What I didn't know is Feud is being presented as an anthology -- meaning, this first season is about the feud between Davis and Crawford. Next season will be about another famous feud. I like that!

FX has been running "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" which is the movie setting in this series that Bette and Joan starred in together.

IMO, Bette Davis was ten times the actress that Crawford was or could ever hope to be. Davis was nominated for best actress for "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" but Crawford was not. And here's where the feud reared its head. Crawford called the other nominees for best actress and offered to accept the award on their behalf if they couldn't attend. Anne Bancroft took her up on that. And Bancroft won that year for Miracle Worker. So Davis had to watch Crawford stand there with Oscar in hand and thank everyone (on Bancroft's behalf).

That's just one of the antics in this feud -- there are many more. I hope others join me in watching this show and discussing in this thread -- I think it will be fun.

Interesting; that's a story I had not heard. Agree with you that Bette was the better actress, and probably the more aggressive of the two...but Joan managed to get her digs in, in that battle of egos. Should be a lively watch, if they nail the tone. Seems well cast; will try to keep up with it.

I'm definitely watching this.

FYI - I heard the next Feud is about Diana and Charles. That should be interesting, too.

Re: Feud:Bette and Joan - FX Sunday

I was skeptical going in, but I have to admit, it held me. Sarandon and Lange were undeniably good in their roles. The period detail was vivid; a mix of authentic early-60s detail with some stylized Hollywood glitz. Great soundtrack of legit crooners of the period (Jack Jones, Mel Torme, Nat King Cole, etc). I liked most of the supporting cast, particularly Alfred Molina as a long-suffering Robert Aldrich (he should be a nervous wreck by series' end) and Judy Davis as Hedda Hopper. I also thought the actresses playing Joan's housemaid and Bette's daughter were also very good. I'm not sure I bought Kathy Bates as Joan Blondell or Stanley Tucci as Jack Warner. I thought the scene with Warner was over-the-top (he's complaining about Bette's lawsuit of 1937 and how he never wants to work with her again because of it; however, Davis became Warner's biggest and most profitable star soon after that, so the scene didn't ring quite true). I thought the language a little gratuitously raw. I kept waiting for the show to pin the ladies' feud on Hollywood or men or the times, but for now at least it portrayed it as I am inclined to think it: the clash between two insecure, jealous artists of large talent and matching egos with some negative history between them working together on a project they both felt they needed to shine in.

I really don't know if the show's creators can keep this up for eight episodes without it all feeling redundant and exhausting, but this one held the interest.

Re: Feud:Bette and Joan - FX Sunday

I thought it was a great introduction.

I have read about Bette's feud about the contract stuff, but didn't remember who it was with. It did cause a huge ruckus. She had the stamina and balls (not necessarily a male thing) and stuck to it. Yes, it changed things in Hollywood.

I was genuinely surprised that these ladies had to do their own makeup and costume choice. How times have changed.

Bette's choice of that white makeup? How bizarre.

I've seen that Baby Jane so many times, and man, I had no idea it was because that's how she chose to portray her character. Brilliant, if you ask me.

Of the two, I think Bette is the crueler. I felt so sorry for Joan at times. But it's a script, right? We'll likely never know the truth.

Molina - great, too.

Re: Feud:Bette and Joan - FX Sunday

Molina, as Aldrich, having to mollify Joan so many times. She is definitely the more tender, needy one. Bette, almost a pillar of DON'T TOUCH ME!

The sight of Bette finally coming to the stage, and everyone goes silent as she waltzes in. Joan appalled, and it seemed everyone else, too. Aldrich, jaw dropping, then does a slow clap, Joan turns, goes away, but the crew joins in the clapping.

This is going to be a very good romp!

Better be. So far, very interested.
