Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi SPOILER Discussion.

So, what did you guys think of this?

I think I liked it a little better than "Force Awakens," but not much better. I think the movie has a lot of problems.

There is a bizarre disconnect on rottentomatoes between critical reviews and audience reviews on this one: Usually I find audiences tend to be more forgiving with movies than critics do, but with this latest Star Wars, it is exactly the opposite, in a BIG way, currently 91% critic consensus, but only 52% from the audience.

As far as my feelings, I felt it had better acting than Phantom Menace, enjoyed it a bit more than Force Awakens, but otherwise a movie with a lot of plot and tone problems.

Too much humor, some intentional, some unintentional, to the point that it felt like the movie was trying to be a parody of itself. The dialogue between Poe and Hux was funny, but it sucked out the tension of the scene. Hux still feels miscast, him and Kylo look like two kids in charge of a bunch of adults. Leia flying through space made me laugh out loud. They should have just killed her off at that point, that would have been a powerful moment if she had actually died then.

The extended fleet chase felt very contrived, made no logical sense, and Poe and Finn's side plot was literally pointless. People have never heard of tracking ships through lightspeed, when that plot point is used TWICE in A New Hope (Vader tracks Leia's ship to Tattooine, Death Star tracks Falcon to Yavin IV). Poe/Finn side plot only happens because Vice Admiral doesn't explain anything. Vice Admiral's plan makes no sense anyway, if they won't notice transports sneaking off, then why wait? Evacuate transports right away, jump all the big ships, and the First Order will jump after them.

And if you can wreck a fleet by jumping a capital ship into it, then why didn't they do that with every single empty ship as it began to run out of fuel? Or why didn't the First Order jump one of their ships through the middle of the rebel fleet? Why isn't this tactic used constantly, all the time?

Rey is a Mary Sue, and other characters are more like plot points. Snoke? No background, just a plot point. Phasma? Practically a cameo so we can have a cool fight for Finn. Vice Admiral? No background, never seen or heard of her before, nothing invested, pure plot point.

The Luke stuff was pretty cool, and the force projection plot device at the end WOULD have been cool IF Luke didn't just die anyway. Like, "Ha ha, you thought you killed me but I'm not even here! Oh wait, I'm dead 2 minutes later." Dumb, anti-climactic.

I gave it a 6.5/10 in the rate the last movie thread. these were my complaints:

1) It was at least 30 minutes too long. The portion of the film at the casino was pointless and gave me major prequel flashbacks with cheesy CGI characters and chases. It dragged the film to a full stop. Other portions of the film could have been trimmed as well such as the empire slowly chasing down the rebel fleet.

2) I agree with Mark Hamill that Rian ruined the character of Luke in so many ways. And what was the point of him milking a large alien walrus.

Would Luke abandon society after a major failing like that? Maybe. But ghost Obi Wan and Yoda would likely talk sense into him.

Would Luke outright contemplate killing a student of his, let alone activate his lightsaber to kill a student? Nope.

Rian turned him into a one liner machine, I guess as comic relief. He barely trained rey or developed as a character. Rey has these combat skills yet little training has ever been shown. That's lazy.

3) Snoke. Oh boy. He's such a master of the Force yet he doesn't recognize Kylo rotating the lightsaber next to him in that poorly written scene. In my opinion, Rian was just trying to be clever and unpredictable by killing off Snoke so quickly. all those theories had about who he was and where he was during during the original trilogy? pointless.

4) The humor. There were so many complete misses on the humor front for me. Although the one thing I expected to despise, the porgs, somehow worked for me half the time. Especially Chewy's campfire scene.

5) Lukes death. I assume the force apparition he created cost him his life?

7) Where's the big cliffhanger? Their remaining fleet is decimated, Luke is dead and Kylo is a mediocre villain. We know that film 9 ends the skywalker saga. So that tells me Kylo will die childless in episode 9. Leia is already dead since Carrie passed away. It's too bad this film didn't end with her sacrificing herself, but the writers had no clue she would die so suddenly.

So is the end goal to kill Kylo and let the empire, lol I mean first Order, continue as it is anyway? that will be rewarding lol.

It was probably a mistake for JJ to do a soft reboot of the series by negating the rebellions victory in ROTJ and bringing back the status quo in the galaxy. That meant a LOT was due to be repeated.

Letting Rian crap all over TFA and determine what he thought was most important was also a mistake. He may be a good director, but he was not a good writer for this film.

It's still a tad better than the best the prequel films had to offer though.

I have no desire to rewatch either TFA or TLJ although they are still much better acted than any prequel. I'd rate Rogue 1 above episodes 7 and 8 even with the uncanny valley issues of Tarkin and Leia

Wait, wasn't the whole plot reveal of TFA that Luke left a secret trail so that the good guys could find him again when he was needed? But in this movie he acts like he never wanted or expected anybody to find him.

Agreed. He's willing to risk everything to flip Vader back, but this movie proposes he gets a bad feeling about Ben, and almost murders him in his sleep.

Yeah, IMO that was a HUGE mistake. It's like he tried to regress both the plot and characters back to the way they were in ANH, with very little justification or explanation:

-Han regressed back to selfish smuggler
-New Republic somehow regressed back into "the resistance" (resisting against what?)
-Empire got rebooted as First Order (whatever the heck that is. Why are they even called that?)

I dunno, man. I agree that the prequels had major problems too, but at this point (especially with the help of The Clone Wars series) they at least still feel like Star Wars. VII and VIII feel more like bad fanfic to me.

I still have a lot of love for Rogue One. I felt like that was a movie that really cared about continuity, plot, and character. I think it may be my 2nd favorite Star Wars movie, second only to ANH.
